Hi, I'm Jo Walton, Hugo, Nebula and World Fantasy Award winning science fiction and fantasy writer. From 2006 to 2014 I ran a small convention in Montreal called Farthing Party. It was for my friends and people who wanted to be my friends -- most people who came were people I knew, but there were a handful of new people every year. It had all the bits of running a convention I'm good at: Program, and a restaurant guide. It was great.

Scintillation will be a small literary focused SF convention on the weekend of Canadian Thanksgiving next year, that is the 5th to 7th October 2018 ETA and 11th to 13th October 2019 and 2020, dates to be decided, but probably the weekend after Thanksgiving. If it's successful, we'll carry on doing it in future years. All people of goodwill are welcome.

It'll take place in the Holiday Inn in Chinatown in Montreal -- for those who know it, that's the one with the pagoda on the top. It's a lovely hotel with a koi pool in the foyer and many excellent function rooms of different sizes. Montreal is a beautiful city with an excellent food culture, and a delightful place to visit. It's easily accessible by train from New York, Ottawa, and Toronto, and it has an airport for those who prefer to fly.

And here's a closeup.
And here's a closeup.

Scintillation will have a focus somewhat like Readercon, but much smaller, and somewhat like Fourth Street. Unlike Fourth Street it isn't only intended for writers. There'll be a lot for writers, but I'll try to keep things balanced between reading and writing. My philosophy of program is to look at the available panellists and put together something that plays to their strengths and interests, and to aim to have synergy between panels. One of the best things about science fiction fandom and the conventions we hold is the way it broadens and deepens the conversation. That's what we want to do with Scintillation. We want to keep the best things from Farthing Party -- like the "Good Read" panel where four people each choose a book and the other three read them and then all four discuss them, and the "Joy of Reading" Sunday morning panel where people read great bits other people's writing. But we're also open to expansion and doing new things. For 2017, we're planning to have a Sassafras concert, and we may (see stretch goals) have a readings and workshops track. We may (again, stretch goals) have gaming.

I stopped doing Farthing Party because every year I suffered agonies of anxiety that we wouldn't have enough members to break even and I'd go into debt to the hotel. It also ate a lot of my time, and in 2014 I decided to stop and concentrate on writing and organizing smaller events with friends. Scintillation is going to be different. For one thing, it's going to be funded (or not) by this Kickstarter. We'll know how much money we have. If there isn't enough interest and it doesn't fund, we'll know now and give up. For another, I have more help. I'll still be doing program, but other people are going to be doing everything else, including the dreaded badge printing. So we can all have more fun.

One of the great things about a convention like this, as opposed to a giant convention, is that everyone gets to hang out with everyone. We're not going to have a guest of honour, but some of the most exciting writers and editors in the genre will be here: some of the people already committed to coming are Ada Palmer, Marissa Lingen, Sherwood Smith, Fran Wilde, Greer Gilman, Ruthanna Emrys, Alison Sinclair, and Alter Reiss. Added post-launch: Also Max Gladstone and Patrick & Teresa Nielsen Hayden and Lila Garrott.

So, if we do actually get to $15000, as it now seems we possibly might, then I will add another truly awesome goal. KEEP GOING FOR NEW GOALS, MY GOODNESS

OK!

At $16,000, we will have a new e-book for 2020, for everyone at Supporter level and above! It will be edited by Alter S. Reiss and called "False Starts". It will contain the beginnings of novels that were started and for some reason couldn't be completed, by me, Alter, and other writers, along with some commentary about them. Then there will be a panel about this from the contributors at the 2020 Scintillation. This will include Those Who Favor Fire the unfinished sequel to Tooth and Claw and the fragments of Beside Ourselves the unfinished sequel to Among Others as well as work by other people. This will be sent out in advance of the 2020 Scintillation. ACHIEVED!

At $17,000, I will share with all backers the recordings of me reading my Norse poetry from Sassafrass's Secret Album -- previously available only to backers of Sassafrass's Kickstarter. ACHIEVED!

At $18,000 we will have more great stuff for Scintillation in 2020, a readings track and a con suite and everything that at that point seems like a good idea.

At $19,000 I will make a new recording of me reading Mountain Doors my Loki poem, and Not in This Town, my Bacchae poem and share them with all backers.

And at $20,000, my new "we could never possibly reach that, but I said that before" goal we will have a new ebook for the 2019 Scintillation, called Better Dreams, for which we will pay the contributors professional rates. It will contain new work by wonderful Scintillation guests, and be edited by Alter Reiss. We'll produce it before the 2019 convention, and send it to everyone who backed at Supporter or above.

Risks and challenges

We've done this before, and we're pretty sure we can do it again, as long as we have the funding. The problem with running a convention is always "what if nobody comes?" Doing it this way, we know you're coming.

What could go wrong? The hotel could sink into a swamp and we'd have to find a hotel at the last minute, there could be a nuclear war, aliens could arrive and give us FTL and everyone would leave for the stars... but we think we're pretty likely to be able to do it.

09/11/2017 - Project Update #1

Funded in nine hours

Well that's pretty great! Scintillation has reached the $3000 minumum goal, which means -- it's really going to happen!

And it's also reached the $3100 stretch goal of having a proper program book and restaurant guide!

Now we're working towards having a consuite. But at this speed, we'll have reached that by the time I get up in the morning. This is amazing. I'm overwhelmed.

You know the best thing? How many people have backed at the Benefactor level. It's wonderful. So many more people will be able to come because of that. It's going to be so great.

(Also, a Chicago-area critic and editor I have known since Usenet has signed up. You know what that means? Panel ideas!)

10/11/2017 - Project Update #2

So many goals met!

I don't want to drown you in updates, but we have met so many goals today that I'm dizzy!

First, we have a Consuite, and the consuite will not only have helium balloons but coffee and water. (It will also have tea, it was always going to have tea, but I thought that went without saying to such an extent that I didn't actually say it.) It may well also have cake and/or pastries.

Next we have Saturday night party in the hotel!

And a Sunday night party which will be here unless we have so many people we won't fit here, in which case it will be somewhere else cool. But probably it will be here.

We have Friday night program!

Next, we have Friday daytime activities which will be dim sum breakfast, followed by trips led by locals to fun Montreal places like Marche Jean Talon and the Jardin Botanique, followed by meeting up in Juliette et Chocolat for afternoon chocolate and dessert.

Best of all, we have reached our goal for funding the Readings and Workshops Track where we'll have a second room that will be used for readings, workshops, and also probably some gaming. Alter will do his popular Show and Tell, and I'm open to ideas from other people who'd be interested in doing presentations and workshops.

We're now steaming ahead towards the $6000 goal of helping to pay for Jon Singer and some other great people to attend! We have a whole bunch of free memberships to offer people, because our Benefactors are so great, so having some extra money for their travel will let us expand who we can invite.

You are all awesome!

21/11/2017 - Project Update #3

We made it! We reached the top! This Kickstarter has been incredibly phenomenally successful and we have blown past all the stretch goals and are over $9000 already. This means we have everything, a consuite, a reading and workshops track, a games room, parties, an expanded ebook, everything. We have an actual Philanthropist, which amazes me, and I am awed and delighted at how many people have backed at the Benefactor level. As of now, we have about 90 people actually coming, and over $9000.

At $9000, I said we'd commit to doing it again in 2019.

So we are. Mark your calendars! Scintillation 2, 2019. October 11th to 13th 2019, Canadian Thanksgiving weekend -- because it's a three day weekend, so we can rest on the Monday.

I've just added some new reward tiers, which are exactly like the existing reward tiers but include membership for 2019. You may, if you wish, adjust your pledge to those new rewards, and buy your 2019 membership now. You don't have to. We won't need to do another Kickstarter, but we will sell 2019 memberships in some normal way. You can save a small amount of money by doing it now, and you can help us go through all the same levels again, to add all these great things for next year. And you can be sure of your membership now. (We probably will have a membership cap of 150, for both years.) But only do it if you're pretty sure you can make it for both years -- although if you do end up with a membership you can't use, we'll do our best to connect you with somebody who wants to buy it from you.

Thank you. Wow. This is amazing. I never thought we would be over 300% funded with a week still to go.

28/11/2017 - Project Update #4

40 hours left!

I woke up this morning to see that the Kickstarter had passed the $18,000 goal at which we commit to doing it in 2020. Wow!

I'm not going to make 2020 reward levels, but if you know you want to come for sure and you want to pay now at 2018 rates, you can add $70, $100, or $150 to the 2019 levels any time you want to, and we'll know what it's for.

New goals!

At $16,000, we will have a new e-book for 2020, for everyone at Supporter level and above! It will be edited by Alter S. Reiss and called "False Starts". Thank you for making this Kickstarter successful beyond our wildest dreams

14/12/2017 - Project Update #5

Kickstarter have sent the money -- and you'll be glad to know that out of all those pledges, only $30 was declined! Amazing. Thank you again, everyone. It was an astonishing outpouring of support.

We have booked the program space for the convention, a big room for main program, a smaller room for the reading/workshop track, a games room, a suite for the consuite, and a room for the Saturday evening party. We're very close to our capacity of actual members for these spaces for 2018. We will definitely not be selling additional memberships this year to anyone who has not already supported the Kickstarter, we're essentially going to be full. But if you have a supporting membership and you're really hoping to come, you probably will be able to.

We'll be sending out backer surveys soon, probably tomorrow, look out for it and please do fill it in.

The hotel room bloc is now available, and can be booked at this link. If this doesn't work (though it should) of it you are the weird kind of person who likes making phonecalls, you also have the option of calling 1 888 878-9888 and using the code "•••". We have negotiated a lower room rate and if you use the link or the code you should get it ($180 instead of $199 IIRC) but we don't have a quota to fill. This also means that the hotel could fill up. It's Thanksgiving weekend and they do have another event. You might as well reserve now and be sure of it, but it's not going to hurt us in any way if you don't, or if you want to stay somewhere else. If it does get full, there are a bunch of other hotels in easy walking distance. Also, the Holiday Inn is right by Place d'Armes metro, so it's easy to get to if you prefer to stay somewhere else.

We have a website! There will be actual information and stuff on it soon! For one thing we're going to archive these updates there. Later, we will sell memberships there for 2019 and 2020.

The e-book is being assembled, we're just waiting for a couple of contributors to send things, and we do hope to have it out to you all this month.

31/12/2017 - Project Update #6

I have just sent out the Scintillation Collection ebook reward to everyone on the Supporter level and above who has filled in their survey. (If you haven't filled in your survey, do it now!)

If you haven't received the ebook, check your spam filters -- I bcced it, and it obviously contains attachments -- and if it isn't there, email me.

It's in all formats, without DRM. Many thanks to the donating authors for their pieces, and especially to Alter and Naomi for doing all the work to get this ready in time to fulfil our promise of December.

Enjoy! And may 2018 bring you good things, and to start it off on the right note, at least you have an ebook to read and Scintillation to look forward to!
